Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the concept of secondary trauma—also known as vicarious trauma—has become a more prominent topic within helping professions. However, these conversations often focus primarily on burnout and self-care, which can overlook the broader systemic impacts of trauma exposure on one’s psyche. Drawing on the work of Connie Burk, Laura van Dernoot Lipsky’s Trauma Stewardship, adrienne maree brown and others, this workshop will provide tools for becoming better stewards of oneself (and others) and for reconnecting with resilience and agency. Designed for those in helping professions, caregiving roles, volunteer work, community organizing, social movement work and anyone who provides care to others.

Consensual non-monogamy (CNM) can bring joy, freedom and connection but it also asks for deep honesty and strong communication. This 90-minute workshop offers practical, evidence-based tools to help participants navigate jealousy, express boundaries, and build emotional security in multi-partner relationships. Drawing on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Dialectical Behavior Training (DBT) and the Gottman Method, participants will reflect on their own needs and communication styles while learning skills to foster trust and repair across relationships. If you are someone who identifies as CNM or CNM curious--whether you are currently in a relationship or not--this reflective space will help you strengthen your connection to yourself and those you love.

In this workshop you will learn:

  1. Evidence-based tools to improve communication in CNM contexts;

  2. To identify and express emotional needs using EFT-informed language;

  3. To strengthen boundary-setting and self-advocacy skills through DBT’s DEAR MAN framework;

  4. To introduce repair and reconnection techniques validated by the Gottman Method;

  5. How to support self-awareness and emotional regulation across multiple attachment relationships.

Bring a pen and journal or paper and be ready for reflection.
