Why don't we take insurance for couples therapy?

All insurance plans require that therapy be provided to a single identified client who has a diagnosable mental health condition. In order to bill insurance, we would have to designate one partner as the "identified patient," assign that person a mental health diagnosis and document that the treatment is medically necessary to address that individual's condition.
Couples therapy focuses on the relationship itself - the patterns, dynamics, communication and shared experiences between both partners. Our work is directed toward improving the relationship system.

We don't want to limit couples therapy to what is considered "medically necessary" for one individual. Couples therapy isn't a covered service by insurance outside of this framework.
COUPLES THERAPY FELLOWSHIP

We offer a rigorous training program for therapists to learn how to effectively provide couples therapy. We provide didactic training in several couples therapy modalities, including certification in Gottman Level 1, RLT Level 1 and EFT Foundations. We provide weekly case consulation and group clinical supervision, focused on couples therapy theory, conceptualization and techniques. Our fellows also receive one-on-one clinical supervision with one of the experienced couples therapists on our team.

Our fellows are experienced individual therapists on our staff who want to expand their practice to serve couples. Working with couples requires very different skills and training than individual work, and we are addressing those differences with our fellowship program.
Our couples therapy fellowship is overseen by Sophie Goff, Clinical Director of Looking Glass Counseling. Sophie is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) from an COAMFTE-accredited Masters training program with over 15 years of clinical experience.

One feature of our fellowship program is that therapy sessions will be recorded. This is so that the fellows can receive direct support and feedback from our training team, offering guidance and suggestions that will immediately benefit the couple. Recordings are stored securely and only viewed by your therapist and the small handful of clinicians and supervisors in our fellowship program. They are deleted after use. We only record with full permission and consent of both parties in the couple.
