The Importance of Maternal Mental Healthy

1 in 5 women experience mental health struggles during or after pregnancy with conditions such as postpartum depression, anxiety and even postpartum psychosis. These conditions can deeply affect a mother’s ability to bond with her baby and care for herself, yet many women suffer in silence due to stigma.

Common challenges include postpartum depression: feelings of sadness and hopelessness, postpartum anxiety: constant worry and fear which can affect daily life and postpartum psychosis: a rare, but serious illness that can cause hallucinations and extreme mood swings.

There’s so much pressure to be a “perfect” mom—but the truth is, there’s no such thing. That pressure can make it really hard to talk about the tough parts of motherhood, especially when it comes to mental health.

How to Support Maternal Mental Health

  • Check In Often: Ask how she’s really doing, not just about the baby. Mothers need to be acknowledged during this transitional period as well.

  • Encourage Help: Gently support her in seeking therapy, support groups, or medical care.

  • Support Self-Care: Help her take small breaks to rest, eat or recharge—even just a few minutes matter.

  • Respect Her Needs: Every mom is different—honor her space, boundaries and comfort level.

Let’s work together to normalize open, honest discussions about maternal mental health. If you or someone you love is struggling, know this: you are not alone. Help is available. You deserve support, healing and hope.
